Squashed

Well, I never much liked squash either, so I should have known better. The very first spoonful came back at me full force, sort of a squash "raspberry!" This one certainly wouldn't be listed in the baby book under "favorite foods." Having been brought up not to waste by parents who had seen the Depression years, I was going to have to find another use for those jars of squash; obviously, our small son did not consider them to be food. One day after he'd learned to sit up well, I put him in the bathtub, no water, and dumped a whole jar of that lovely orange stuff in front of him. Perhaps it could serve as an art medium. My, my, what a fine time he had finger painting! And it was a long time before he had his "fill" of it. In the process a funny thing happened: as is always the case with babies, some of it got in his mouth!

How spiritual food is presented must also vary with people's tastes and maturity. But, if it continues to be offered, somehow, sometime, in some way it will be taken in and "inwardly digested."

Blessed Lord, who caused all scripture to be written for our

learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and

inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold

fast the blessed hope of everlasting life.

Book of Common Prayer

Daniel 1.18 - But Daniel made up his mind not to eat the food and wine given to them by the king.

1 Corinthians 2.3 - I have had to feed you with milk and not with solid food, because you couldn't digest anything stronger. And even now you still have to be fed on milk. For you are still only baby Christians, controlled by your own desires, not God's.

Hebrew 5.13 - You are like babies who can drink only milk, not old enough for solid food. And when a person is on milk, it shows he is not very far along in the Christian life, and doesn't know much about the difference between right and wrong. He is still a baby Christian! You will never be able to eat solid spiritual food and understand the deeper things of God's Word until you become better Christians and learn right from wrong by practicing what is right.

1 Peter 2.2 - Be like newborn babies, always thirsty for the pure spiritual milk, so that by drinking it you may grow up and be saved.

2 Timothy 4.2 - Correct and rebuke your people when they need it, encourage them to do right, and all the time be feeding them patiently with God's Word.

2 Corinthians 12.14-15 - You are my children and little children don't pay for their father's and mother's food - it's the other way around; parents supply food for their children. I am glad to give you myself and all I have for your spiritual good.

Job 12.11-13 - Just as my mouth can taste good food, so my mind tastes truth when I hear it.

Job 23.12 - I have not refused his commandments, but have enjoyed them more than my daily food.

Psalm 36.8 - You fed them with blessings from your own table and let them drink from your rivers of delight.

Proverbs 3.18 - Wisdom is a tree of life to those who eat her fruit, happy is the man who keeps on eating it.

Isaiah 55.2 - Why spend money on what does not satisfy? Why spend your wages and still be hungry? Listen to me and do what I say, and you will enjoy the best food of all.

1 Corinthians 10.3 - All ate the same spiritual food and all drank the same spiritual drink, since they all drank from the spiritual rock that followed them as they went, and that rock was Christ.

John 4.31-34 - The disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, do have something to eat;" but he said, "I have food to eat that you do not know about." So the disciples asked one another, "Has someone been bringing him food?" But Jesus said: "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to complete his work."
